Price Transparency
Through DocFind, Aetna members now have online access to clinical quality and efficiency data, in addition to physician-specific cost information, in select markets. Members can view clinical quality and efficiency information for approximately
71,000 physicians. Pricing information is available for approximately
320,000 physicians and physician groups, covering approximately 180 specialties (e.g., pediatrics and cardiology).
The physician-specific clinical performance and efficiency information, updated annually, is taken from our evaluation process to identify specialists in Aetna’s Aexcel specialty categories for Aexcel designation. This information is based on volume of members treated, cost-effectiveness and clinical performance, including prevalence of complications and repeat procedures.
The physician-specific cost information is the amount that we will reimburse a specific physician for a specific service when provided to a member. Rates do not factor in member copayment, deductible, coinsurance or any other third-party obligations or responsibilities. The Transparency tool accesses our pricing systems in real time, and displays the rates in effect on that day.
The Transparency initiative provides both physician-specific cost and
clinical quality and efficiency information for Arizona; California (Central
Valley, Los Angeles, San Diego, Northern California); Colorado; Connecticut;
D.C. (Washington); Delaware; Florida (North Florida, Orlando, Tampa and South
Florida); Georgia (Atlanta); Illinois (Chicago); Indiana (Indianapolis and
Southeast Indiana) Kentucky (Northern Kentucky); Maine; Maryland; Kansas (Kansas
City); Michigan (Detroit); Missouri (Kansas City); New York (Metro NY); Ohio
(Cincinnati, Cleveland/Toledo, Columbus (Central Ohio), Dayton); Pennsylvania
(Pittsburgh); Texas (Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, San Antonio); Oklahoma
(Oklahoma City, Tulsa); Virginia (Richmond, Northern Virginia); Washington
(Seattle).
This information helps members calculate their out-of-pocket costs before visiting their doctor. This is especially beneficial for members who have a high-deductible health plan connected to a Health Savings Account or a Health Reimbursement Arrangement.
