Generic vs. Brand Name

When you fill a prescription at a Costco pharmacy, you'll save when your doctor indicates that a generic drug may be substituted for the brand-name drug. Generic drugs are equivalent in safety and effectiveness to their brand-name counterparts, but they cost less. Remember, if you get a brand-name drug when a generic is available, you'll pay the difference in cost plus the applicable copay.

If you or your Physician requests a brand-name prescription drug when a Therapeutic Equivalent Generic Drug is available, you’ll pay the name-brand copay plus the cost difference between the brand-name and Generic Drug. Some exclusions apply, see the Summary Plan Description for more details.
